Rumoured to have been founded as far back as 676 AD, the Pilgrims’ School in it’s current form, has been located in it’s Grade II listed building in the heart of Winchester since 1931. The Pilgrims’ is a private independent preparatory all-boys school, which since 2007, also has a pre-prep department, educating Reception and Years 1 & 2 boys (Ages 4 – 7).
The school forms part of Winchester Cathedral (though it operates independently) and is considered one of the top choir schools in the UK, with two professional choirs. As well as a strong tradition in producing Choristers and Quiristers, the Pilgrims’ has a track record of excellent academic, sporting and musical success. With facilities such as a heated outdoor swimming pool, medieval hall, concert room, music rooms and a large art studio, as well as close links with nearby Winchester College, the Pilgrims’ School is very well equipped to excel in a range of academic and extra curricular activities.
Boarding facilities are available for boys in Year 4 and upwards. There are around 80 boarders accommodated across two boarding houses, and the option of weekly or full boarding is offered. The boarding houses have a full management staff and a matron and there are a wide range of activities offered in evenings and at weekends. The school also conveniently offers day pupils the chance to week long ‘boarding taster’ whereby they can see what boarding is like before moving into the Pilgrim’s accommodation or as a trial if they are planning to attend a senior boarding school.
Admissions to the preparatory school (Year 3+/Age 7+) requires the potential pupils to take several assessments including Mathematics and English. This usually takes place in November, with pupils actually starting the following September. Boys looking to take up a choral place do so in Year 4, though auditions are held in Year 3. The school recommends getting in contact to to arrange a guided tour prior to submitting a registration form. The pre-preparatory admissions process involves attendance at an activity morning, normally held in March, with term starting in September. For further information on admissions to either section of the school, please contact the Pilgrim’ via the contact details above.
Bursaries are available for certain criteria and scholarships are also sometimes awarded, subject to the decision of the awarding commitee.
