St Winifred’s School is a private independent school in the heart of Southampton, located very close to the University of Southampton’s Avenue Campus. The school was originally founded in 1880 as a girls high school, but is now a mixed gender (coeducational) school containing around 100 pupils. The school is part of The Gregg & St Winifred’s School Trust, with The Gregg School being an independent private school for pupils aged 11 – 16. The relationship between the two schools dates back over 35 years. The school site also contains April House Nursery for the youngest children.
St Winifred’s School prides itself in offering small class sizes, with subject specific teachers and classes. Sport and fitness is prioritised at the school with swimming, netball, hockey and football amongst the many sports offered. Lunchtime and after- school sports clubs are actively encouraged, with recent classes including ballet, judo and general fitness clubs proving popular. The school also has an engaging creative arts department which aims to make sure pupils develop their musical, dance or performance abilities. Recitals and productions are a regular feature of the department.
In terms of admissions, there is an interview with the headteacher for both the pupil and parents, but there is no official entry examination. The school also provides the option of a free trial day which helps to give the child a feel for the school before they actually start. An application form must be completed and is available via the contact details above.
St Winifred’s School is a day school, open from 8am – 6pm. It therefore does not offer boarding facilities for pupils. Means-tested bursaries are available and the school should be contacted directly for more information.
