Founded in 1884, St Swithun’s Junior School has been located on the current site with the senior school since the late 1960s. The school sits in 45 acres of land and the grounds are very attractive, situated on the outskirts of Winchester.
With approximately 200 pupils, boys and girls are able to enter St Swithun’s Nursery at the age of three. Boys can attend until the end of Key Stage 1 (age seven/Year 2), when they leave to attend a local prep school. Girls enter aged three and remain studying at St Swithun’s until aged 11 (Year 6), when they can can take the Common Entrance exam for the senior school.
The school has a range of good facilities located at the 45 acre site including large playing fields, an indoor swimming pool, a multi-purpose hall, a large music room and a range of specialist classrooms. Sports participation and competition is encouraged, including swimming, netball, gymnastics, lacrosse, athletics amongst much more. Lessons in a huge variety of music instruments are offered and there are regular opportunities to perform and participate in musical activities and workshops. Drama and art is very well catered for and there is also and extensive network of after-school clubs and societies.
Regarding admissions, there is no entry examination for the junior school. Parents are advised to request a prospectus, arrange a visit to the school and then to complete a registration form and pay a registration fee. The junior school is a day school, so no boarding facilities are available to the juniors. However, the school can provide care from 7.30am – 6pm for a small additional cost if necessary. St Swithun’s Junior School operates a house system and it also believes in giving small amounts of homework. Some bursaries may be available subject to means-tested criteria. The junior school is located at the same site as St Swithun’s Senior School.
