St Mary’s College was founded in 1922 and was established by Brothers of Christian Instruction. This Roman Catholic school sits in around 18 acres of land with separate buildings for the preparatory and senior schools as well as other independent classrooms. The school has around 300 pupils in total and is comprised of Charlton House Nursery and Prep School and St Mary’s College which is the senior school.
Charlton House has dedicated music and drama rooms as well as a comprehensive IT centre. There are also teachers who specialise in music, French and P.E. There is a choice of musical instrument tuition and all children are encouraged to join the choir and participate in performances and excursions to local concerts. Competitive sports are given priority and the huge playing fields located within the school grounds help to facilitate this.
St Mary’s College senior school also gives attention to music, art and sports. Musically the pupils have a wide range of options ranging from lessons, an orchestra, Christian rock bands, choirs and stage performances and productions. A new gym, combined with the ample playing fields means pupils have a variety of sports to engage in, including Athletics, Football, Netball, Table-tennis and Badminton, amongst much more. Recent years has also seen the school arrange sailing trips on the River Itchen.
Regarding admissions, parent need to complete an application form and then the child will be invited to take an entrance examination which covers maths, English and problem solving.
