St John’s College is a mixed gender independent private school located in Southsea. Founded in 1908 and containing around 670 pupils, St John’s is both a day and a boarding school. The school has been in it’s current Grove Road South location since 1914 and contains an Early Years Nursery, lower and upper schools, a senior school and a sixth form.
The school has a great range of facilities including a large library, a comprehensive music department and a big sports hall, gym and tennis courts. The school also owns 40 acres of land on a site nearby which contains football and rugby pitches, tennis and netball courts, a cricket pitch and athletics provisions. The college also contains a school chapel and a medical centre.
The nursery is located in a listed Victorian building on the main site and has access to all the school’s facilities. It contains around 30 boys and girls and it’s open hours are 8am – 5.30pm. The children have regular opportunities to partake in a range of activities and parents are also encouraged to have consultations and ask any questions.
The infant and junior schools are also located on the main campus. A broad curriculum is taught to small class sizes and each form teacher is accompanied by a full time teaching assistant. A range of excursions, sports and activities are always on offer including Spanish, gardening, orchestra, creative writing, team sports and community visits. Outside trips are aided by the fact that the school has a range of coaches and minibuses at it’s disposal. The older children are encouraged to ‘buddy up’ with younger pupils and they are also well prepared to go on into the senior school.
The senior school has entrants from the Junior school as well as from other local primary and prep schools. The school operates an established house system which provides a competative nature in some sports and activities. Starting in Year 9, the pupils are able to take International General Certificates of Secondary Education (IGCSEs) in Maths, English, and Science, as well as the standard UK GCSEs. For particularly high achieving pupils, there is a ‘Masterclass’ programme that aims to maximise and challenge the students further than the scope of the standard curriculum.
The Sixth Form provides the opportunity to study a range of A Levels and EPQs and provides students with good preparation for moving onto further education.
There are 6 boarding houses at St John’s College, and accommodates around 125 boarders. Boys and girls have separate boarding houses and they are also separated by ages, with senior boarders given a strong sense of responsibility for the welfare of younger boarders. Boarders normally share a room with one or two others and they have access to a range of facilities. There is a permanent member of staff in each house and there is good access to the nursing staff in the medical centre.
Regarding admissions, entry to the infant school is largely informal and normally takes place at an arranged orientation morning. An entry assessment is required for the junior school before a place is offered. Admission to the senior school requires an interview with the headmaster as well as an assessment in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. References may also be required if entering from an external school. Entrants to the sixth form will also be subject to an interview with the headmaster and predicted GCSE grades will be required prior to any acceptance.
