Portsmouth High School is a private independent day school for girls aged between 3 – 18. The school was founded in 1882 and has been situated at it’s present location in Southsea since 1885. In total, the school has around 500 pupils spanning the nursery, junior, senior and sixth form, with the newest section being the nursery, which opened in 2005.
The Early Years Department is for girls aged 3 – 5 and it’s core opening hours are 8.30am – 3.30pm, with a pre-school breakfast club (from 7.30am) and after-school care (until 6pm) available as an option. There are many events that are designed to encourage parents and children to come and visit the nursery and there is a mother and toddler ‘Stay & Play’ morning once per week for parents to come have an informal taster of the facilities.
The Junior School is made up of girls up to the age of 11 and also has core hours and before and after-school care available as with the nursery. Pupils at the junior school have consistently performed above the national average and the curriculum is suitably challenging. A varied range of out-of-school clubs and activities are available to the junior girls, including hockey, Spanish and orchestra. There are opportunities throughout the year for parents and daughters to visit to get a feel for the atmosphere. The majority of girls go from the Junior School into the Senior School at the age of 11.
The Senior School consists of just over 300 girls aged 11-16. The curriculum is broad and balanced and exam results have tended to be excellent and well above the national average. In addition to the strong exam results, the girls have access to a huge range of extra-curricular activities from the Duke of Edinburgh Award and foreign exchanges to music lessons, dance classes and a wealth of sporting activities. Admission to the senior school requires interviews and assessments in English and Maths. There are also several open days and opportunities to have taster days throughout the year. More information is avialble from the Admissions Officer via the contact details above. Many girls stay on to attend the Sixth Form between the ages of 16 – 18.
The Sixth Form is attended by approximately 60 girls and has a range of challenging A Levels. It also has a good reputation for girls leaving at the age of 18 and going on to attend top universities.
Scholarships (including sixth form scholarships) and bursaries are available to pupils meeting certain criteria.
