Mayville High School is a private independent school for boys and girls between the ages of 3 – 16. Established in 1897, the school is located in Southsea, about 1 mile from Portsmouth city centre and contains around 470 pupils. Mayville High school is split into 4 departments; the nursery, pre-prep, junior and the main senior school and is a day school without boarding facilities.

The school has some great facilities, many of which were rebuilt after the devastating floods that badly affected Southsea in 2000. Among the new facilities includes a multi-purpose hall, 2 new science labs, a comprehensive music studio and a big art studio. Mayville also boasts a dyslexia unit which specialises in assisting and tailoring individual education programmes for children with dyslexia.

Mayville High School encourages it’s pupils to participate in the wide variety of clubs and societies that are active in the school. These vary from music, art, gardening to St John’s Ambulance and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Fundraising and being active in the local community is also very important to the school.

As the school ranges from nursery all the way up to senior school, there are several points where pupils may join the school. Admission to the nursery and reception classes normally requires a visit for a day or session and a meeting with staff. Entry to the pre-prep and junior section will require the pupil to spend a day with their class and they will also undergo a small assessment. External pupils wishing to join the senior school are required to spend a day at Mayville and to also complete an assessment morning. Pupils already in attendence at the junior school will automatically gain a place at the senior school. Further information on the school’s admission policy is available via the contact details above.

The school does offer scholarships and has a bursary programme for pupils meeting certain criteria.
