Daneshill School is an independent private day school for boys and girls aged 3 – 13 years. Founded in 1950, the school is located in the small Hampshire village of Stratfield Turgis, about 8 miles north of Basingstoke and 6 miles north of Hook. The school itself is split into the nursery, pre-prep and prep departments and educates a total of around 250 pupils.
The nursery is for children aged 3 and 4 and is housed in it’s own specially-built building. Open on weekdays between 8.30am – 4.10pm, the nursery has a substantial outdoor play area, well-utilised by the children. Learning through play, with an encouragement in developing communication and literacy skills is a strong part of the ethos.
The pre-prep school contains children that join both from the Daneshill nursery, as well as a great many from external nurseries and pre-schools. It contains children from the age of 4-7 and prides itself on having small classes with a high teacher/classroom assistant to pupil ratio. It contains a strong and broad curriculum with additional focus on music, performing arts and sports. The oldest children also start to learn French and are well prepared to move onto the prep school.
The preparatory school at Daneshill is made up of around 130 children and is started at the age of 7. The school operates a house system that compete academically and via sporting activities and it has a high success rate with pupils gaining scholarships to senior schools. Their is also a healthy extra curricular programme at the school from chess to dance to music lessons, as well as a range of sports. Daneshill School runs a successful Leadership Programme aimed at developing the personal skills of it’s pupils and it also provides many opportunities for excursions and holiday camps.
Daneshill School is a non-selective school, so there is no assessment examination required to gain entry. However, parents and children are encouraged to arrange a visit to the school to meet teachers and current pupils as well as having a tour of the school. Potential pupils for the prep school are expected to spend at least one morning at the school prior to enrollment. Scholarships are awarded and some means-tested bursaries are available.
