Alton Convent School is a Catholic faith, private independent day school located in Alton, Hampshire. Founded in 1936. The nursery and prep school educate boys and girls aged 2 – 11, while the senior school and sixth form (ages 11 – 18) are girls-only facilities. Set on a campus of 19 acres, the school contains just under 500 pupils and is made up of the main manor house building, plus a range of purpose built buildings serving different purposes.
The Garden House Day Nursery is set in a scenic walled garden with an outdoor play area. It is open from 8am to 6pm, so provides the option of both full and half day sessions. Older children also have the opportunity for music, dance and cookery lessons, as well as sports, dance and other activities.
The Prep School prides itself in being able to go beyond the standard national curriculum. There is strong emphasis on making the most of the substantial grounds that the school is located on, so a huge amount of sporting activities and competitions are ongoing. Religious and moral education and information technology are high priorities within the school, as are the other standard curricular subjects. For admission to the Prep School, there is no form entrance exam or assessment. Parents and children are encouraged to arrange a visit to the school before registering, and any offer of a place is subject to spaces being available.
The Alton Convent Senior School has a great range of facilities, which are also available to the other age groups. Set in around 32 acres of land, the school has a multitude of sporting facilities including multiple tennis courts, hockey pitches, netball courts, an athletics track, a sports hall and a gym. There are also lots of extra curricular activities available from the aforementioned sports to Photoshop classes, music classes and language clubs. Small classes are a feature of the school and pupils are afforded a wide ranging curriculum. To gain entry to the school, there is an entrance exam consisting of maths, English and verbal reasoning papers as well as an interview. The school awards a range of scholarships each year and there are means tested bursaries available.
Housed in it’s on purpose built building on the campus, the Sixth Form contains around 40 girls and have the choice of a great array of A Levels to study. There are also programmes of enrichment within the sixth form that include work experience, voluntary work and trips overseas, including a trip to India. Guidance is given on further education and open days to Oxford and Cambridge colleges are arranged every year, with many girls going onto top universities. Entrance to the sixth form is subject to an interview and place being offered. There a also open evening and a taster day for prospective students and current and former sixth-forms are on hand to give talks and answer questions about academic life.
